This picture gives you an idea of how wonderful our travel weather was the whole way to Florida! Beautiful clear skies, calm winds — even at our two planned overnights at a Flying J in Kentucky and one in Dothan, Alabama were easy.
We decided that all the "motor home snowbirds" had left
earlier than us or else, they were taking a different route down to
Florida because we had our pick of spots at both Flying Js.
A Flying J stop works like this — we park our motor home in a designated spot, sleep, and then get up and go to breakfast at the Denny's restaurant located at the Flying J. This actually worked out really well, because on our trip down, the nights were cold. When we woke up at the Flying J in Kentucky, the temperatures were 23 degrees outside and 33 degrees inside our motor home! (A little bit like winter camping on the way to Florida :-) So hot coffee and a warm breakfast at Denny's hits the spot.
We had a great time listening to a book tape — Ken Follett's Fall of Giants. Fall of Giants is an epic story about World War 1. We had a lot of fun trying to remember our European history and stopping the tape periodically to look up information about different people such as Wilhelm II and events like the Zimmermann Telegram. Between the great weather, interesting conversation, and a wonderful book, the travel time flew by!
